Mary-Kate Olsen denies supplying Heath Ledger any drugs

Yesterday there was a story in the NY Daily News that investigators from the Drug Informcement Agency looking into actor Heath Ledger’s death wanted to talk to Mary-Kate Olsen, but that she refused to speak with them unless they granted her immunity from prosecution.

Olsen is a friend of Heath’s and was the first person contacted by the woman who found his body, a masseuse who also worked for the actress. Instead of instructing the masseuse to call 911, Olsen sent private security guards over. By most accounts the security guards arrived after emergency services. The coroner found that Heath died “as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects” of six prescription drugs. The DEA found that five out of six of the drugs were prescribed to Heath by two doctors, but that the painkiller OxyContin, an opiate, was not.

There’s logical speculation that Mary-Kate either supplied Heath with the Oxycontin or knows who did, but her lawyer denies that she had anything to do with the drugs found in his system. Mary-Kate’s lawyer also says that she’s already cooperated with officials. People Magazine reports that they were able to independently confirm that Mary-Kate has requested immunity from prosecution, though and her lawyer’s statement doesn’t address that issue nor does he say that the actress spoke with investigators:

“Despite tabloid speculation, Mary-Kate Olsen had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger’s home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them,” said the statement from attorney Michael C. Miller on Monday.

The statement was released following a report, confirmed by PEOPLE, that Olsen, 22, wants immunity from prosecution before she will cooperate with a federal investigation into close friend Ledger’s death from an accidental overdose.

“Regarding the government’s investigation, at Ms. Olsen’s request, we have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger’s death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed,” the statement from her attorney continues.

The statement concludes: “We don’t know the source of the information being quoted in the media regarding the government’s inquiry, but these descriptions are incomplete and inaccurate.”

If Mary-Kate didn’t request immunity, then the lawyer probably would have stated that directly instead of just saying the reports are “incomplete and inaccurate.” It seems like there’s something going on here. Maybe it’s true that she didn’t supply anything to Heath and that she sent her security guys over there in a misguided attempt to protect his privacy. Either way, she’s not doing his family any favors by being so dodgy about what she knows.
